How things change. One time (in the 1950’s) Milton Berle was the top paid performer in the US. Known as “Uncle Milty”, and “Mr. Television”, on NBC's Texaco Star Theater, the baggy pants comedian with a bawdy sense of humor who was better know and beloved that the President of the United States. Berle was an ex-vaudevillian with a kind of ethic/Jewish humor, a ground breaker, he cross-dressed and did parody's on TV in the “golden age” of broadcasting. He had his own tag line, “I kill you, I kill you a million times!” Barbra Streisand recorded one of the novelty songs he wrote, Sam, You Made The Pants Too Long! which was a homage to his tailor Sam Beckenstein.
Berle was as they say…”always on!” as manic and exhausting as Robin Williams. Berle had a kind of “sthick” when approached for an autograph he would ask you your name and then repeat it for emphasis, than hand you back your autograph which was addressed “To Miriam” a name he thought was funny, hence this autograph for me… aka Miriam
